Sigma-Aldrich, now known as MilliporeSigma, is an American chemical, life sciences and biotechnology company. It was founded in 1975 through the merger of Sigma Chemical Company and Aldrich Chemical Company. Sigma-Aldrich grew through various acquisitions and had more than 9,600 employees.
The company has two U.S. headquarters in St. Louis and Burlington, Massachusetts, and operates in approximately 40 countries. In 2015, Sigma-Aldrich was acquired by multinational chemical conglomerate Merck Group for $17 billion and is now part of Merck’s life sciences business, working in conjunction with the previously acquired Millipore.
